In 1755, Lisbon was one of the most splendid cities in Europe, but on November 1st of that year, it was struck by a devastating earthquake, followed by a tsunami and fires. This catastrophe claimed tens of thousands of lives and destroyed much of the city. The reconstruction that followed reshaped Lisbon, giving rise to the elegant and orderly downtown area that defines much of its character today.
Among Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks is the São Jorge Castle, which overlooks the historic district of Alfama, the city’s oldest neighbourhood. Another highlight is the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture linked to the Age of Discoveries. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is also a must-visit, housing one of the most important art collections in Europe.
